“Everyone wants to be the sun to brighten up someone’s life, but why not be the moon, to shine on someone’s darkest hour”.
These words are the perfect fit for the work which this 25-year old girl is doing in these tough times when the 2nd wave of Covid is hitting our nation very hard. I felt very motivated when I talked to her. Here’s a glimpse of our conversation.
Q1. Sakshi tell me something about your background.
Ans. My name is Sakshi Sawhney. I’m from Jammu. My father Sirinder Kumar is a Retd. Navy officer and mother, Neetu Sawhney is house manager. I am a B.Tech ECE graduate from MIET, Jammu. I also presented a research paper in IEEE International Conference on Recent Advances in Interdisciplinary Sciences in 2019.
Q2. I saw your interview on Facebook can you tell me about the work you are doing in detail?
Ans. My brother Arjun Sawhney, who’s pursuing B.Tech and I started distributing meals outside SMGS hospital, Jammu. From there only, we get to know about the ground conditions of daily wage workers and laborers, as they are worst affected by the corona virus. I felt very bad and that’s when I decided to shift the focus to peoples living in slums and daily wage workers. Now we distribute foods such as- Rice, Dal, Flour, Milk, water, bread, fruits, and vegetables from Janipur to Kot bhalwal region in Jammu. We are also distributing masks and hand sanitizers to stop the flow of corona virus.
We started this initiative with our pocket money and savings. My family is my backbone in this. Later on my relatives, friends and even teachers came in my support.
Q3. Did you face any problems when you started this initiative and how you overcame them?
Ans. Yes.I did face some problems. Initially my father was very concerned about me going out amid this corona virus as I was only recovering from Covid when I decided to start this initiative. My oxygen levels were even below 85 and I was on steroid. So he was concerned as chances of Black fungus were also high at that time.
I was highly motivated by the words of a doctor that “You got a second life make best use of it” and these words have been my driving force since then. Also, I believe in taking calculated risks. And it’s a fact when you are working for a bigger purpose, god always favors you. So I managed to start it.
Q4. Who’s your inspiration or role model?
Ans. I am really inspired by one of my school teacher Shashi Bedi ma’am. She used to teach us biology and I learned how to be kind to others and spread love. She has been my inspiration throughout my life. I admire her a lot.
Q5. What are your future plans?
Ans. My aim is to become a teacher because as Nelson Mandela said “ Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to make a change in the world”. But for this initiative which I started, I am thinking to join an NGO.
Q6. Any message for the people out there?
Ans. My message to the people is that “firstly we are humans and we have to be kind and respectful to not only other humans but also to our coexisting species like animals, plants and others as well. We should treat them with respect”. Sakshi is doing her part in our nation’s service very gently and proudly and is also inspiring others to do so.
