MOI NAMASTE is an Indian-Finnish initiative aimed towards providing fair and dignified livelihood opportunities for artisans. They co-create products with artisan partners while also focusing on sustainability and leaving a low carbon footprint. This was ideated at the founders’, Pukhraj and Iiro’s wedding. Instead of giving gifts to the wedding attendees, they used this budget to support local self-help groups that work with mothers to create handmade products.
Their Vision:
After a decade of work in the education and development sector, Pukhraj has now begun her mission to support sustainable livelihoods of Indian craftsmen with the help of Iiro’s experience in the logistical expertise. Their main aim is to connect the Nordic world to the intricacies of Indian craftsmanship.
They have over 250 artisans working with them and over 90% of them are women. They work with artisans from all over the nation. Be it NGOs of the north, Baskets and earrings from the east, block printers of Rajasthan or tackling social issues of the south, they have it all covered. They sell a multitude of products ranging from incense sticks to clothing to stationary.
The Impact:
They are elevating the Indian culture overseas and promoting cultural handicraft. They are essentially increasing rural employment by providing a platform to underrated artisans and give them a voice of themselves.
They also facilitate a blog on their website where they talk about the different details about the Indian handicraft culture. This way they raise awareness and popularity for the same. They also organize fundraisers for supporting various social causes. Foe example, their community helped raise 2,93,728 rupees for Mhashakti Seva Kendra in times of Covid.
This initiative is a very good example pf how we can use our privilege and platform for social welfare. We as the youth of our nation shall take the responsibility to accommodate the Indian culture and heritage in the modern society through various creative ways. Pukhraj and Iiro have managed to do just that.
